November 20, 2012

SLVFD members Erik Stender and Brendan Woodard graduated from the New York State Firefighter 1 course offered in Malone NY. The class ran from September until today.

The "Firefighter I" course is designed to prepare the student for work as a "combat ready" interior structural firefighter. The course combines the following courses into 1 complete course. Essentials of Firefighting, Initial Fire Attack, Fire Behavior, Haz-Mat Operations, Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness, and Confined Space Awareness. The course also includes components of Firefighter Survival and Mask Confidence.

A graduation ceremony was held at the Bangor NY fire station tonight to recognize this achievement. Among the approximately 75 attendees was Chief Brendan Keough, 2nd Assistant Chief Jim Stinson, and the graduates family members. Of special note; 7 term past Chief Ed Woodard and past SLVFD member Chris Woodard were able to observe Brendan Woodard receive his diploma. Brendan marks 4 generations for his family serving in the SLVFD. He follows Great-Great Uncles William Harvey and Monroe Flagg, his Grandfather Ed Woodard and his Father Chris Woodard.

SLVFD members did receive some special recognition. Erik Stender received a trophy for being selected for the "Instructors Award" and Brendan Woodard received a certificate thanking him for serving as the "Class President"

We would like to congratulate our members, we are very proud of thier achievement.
