Our annual toy drive started off with a bang! Two truckloads of amazing toys and blankets were delivered by Robert and Merle Smith before our doors were even opened, from there the toys just continued to flow in for the next 4 hours. So many different toys were dropped off by small children, teenagers, and adults. The second bay of the fire house was filled to capacity. In addition to toys several people dropped off hats, mittens, and warm socks for the children in the holiday helper program.

One of the highlights for co-chairs of the Holiday Helper program Patti Ploof and Dawn Rogers was when a gentleman dropped off a large bag of toys as any of the donors did, but then approached Patti and Dawn and relayed his heartfelt thanks. This gentleman and his family had been prior recipients of the services of Holiday helpers and are now in an improved position to pay it forward.

So, where do the toys go from here? Following the toy drive, the toys were loaded by the firefighters and delivered to the Saranac Lake Baptist church where they will be sorted by Holiday Helpers volunteers. They will be placed on tables by recommended age, where parents escorted by Elves, will be able to choose gifts on distribution day. Prior to distribution day each toy requiring batteries will be loaded with batteries and recipients will even receive an extra set of batteries. On distribution day in addition to the toys, families receive clothing if requested as well as a huge food basket to help them through the holiday season.

During the toy drive SLVFD volunteers decorated the firehouse and visited with community members dropping off toys.

We as well as the Holiday Helpers organization are so grateful for the generosity of our community. This event is a part of what makes living in Saranac Lake so special.
