Fire prevention week ended today for the SLVFD with our annual open house but not until 537 children from 6 different schools were visited by SLVFD members. Schools participating were Petrova Elementary, Saint Bernards, Kids-R-Us, Childrens Corner, ACAP Head Start, and the Northern Lights School. Special thank you to Firefighters Steve Sweet, Craig Barry, Damon Jacobs, Julie Harjung, Brendan Keough, and Christina Barbour for taking time out of their busy work schedules to spend time with the Children. A few more schools remain to be visited in the upcoming week.

Children were taught age appropriate fire safety lessons including recognizing firefighters with all their equipment on, stop drop and roll, exit drills, and how and when to call for emergency assistance.

Members of the public were invited to the firehouse today and were treated to a tour of the station. On hand was Smokey Bear, Ladder 144, fire safety and SLVFD videos, an underwater camera search, and a chance for children to dress up in firefighter gear and squirt a real fire hose at a building with a mock fire in the windows. As always plenty of fire safety literature, and smoke detector batteries were available. Hot Dogs were grilled in front of the station and lots of refreshments were served.

Fire Safety Week is a great time to learn fire safety and visit with your firefighters. The SLVFD would like to thank all those who visited this year. Stay Safe!!!
