Fred Rogers is often famously quoted as saying,

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping”

The months that we have been in this pandemic could certainly be considered as scary to some.

During times of trouble we reach out to those willing to help. Your SLVFD consists of dedicated volunteers from our community. Despite the troubles, hazards, and hardships associated with the COVID pandemic some members of our community have stepped up to help in a big way by signing up and then moving through the application process to join the SLVFD.

Uriah Kiser, Christy Fontana, and Sara Ashley joined the SLVFD since the pandemic began, they have begun training and have been on actual responses already. If you see them in the community please step up and congratulate and thank them. They are great examples of community spirit. “They are some of the helpers”

Uriah Kiser was born and raised on Brookyln NY. When he was 8 he and his family moved to Lake Placid. Because he witnessed 9/11 In NYC he always wanted to serve as a fireman after that. He moved around the country with his family and ended up back in Saranac Lake. He works In NYC with businesses doing marketing and consulting work. Also working with artists, performers, etc. He loves music, creating and helping others pursue their passions.

Christy Fontana joined the SLVFD in July of 2020. She and her husband, Dominic, moved to Saranac Lake in 1986. They love this community, and raised their four children here. Dominic joined the fire department several years ago. Christy retired in June after working for twenty-plus years in the Saranac Lake Free Library. She is an avid reader of many genres. She is honored to be accepted into the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department to serve as fire police or in any other position needed.

Sara Ashley hails from Colorado and moved to the Adirondacks in 2018. She loves being in the mountains and is happy to be able to still pursue hiking and snowboarding surrounded by so much beauty right out her back door. Sara works as the Whiteface Mountain Medical service area Supervisor and as an EMT on the Wilmington Rescue Squad. Sara has found serving as a volunteer firefighter for the past 5 years an enriching experience, and is excited to join up with the SLVFD family.
