SLVFD Trains For Airport Response

October 26, 2014

This month members of the SLVFD trained on responding to incidents at the Adirondack Airport in Lake Clear.

Under the direction of Airport Mangager Corey Hurwitch, The Adirondack Regional Airport staff are trained to respond to aircraft related fires. They maintain an airport crash, fire, and rescue vehicle which has the capability of responding in close proximity of a very hot fire that might be generated from burning aviation fuels. That vehicle has master stream and hand lines available. The master streams can be operated from inside the cab so the operator can remain safe inside the vehicle. The vehicle also carries a supply of foam. Airport employees are required to attend an annual multi-day certification and training held in Rochester NY to be prepared for an aircraft related fire. They also routinely exercise and train on the "CFR" vehicle.

In the event of an aircraft fire the SLVFD and other area departments are prepared to respond as back up to the "CFR" . This week members of the SLVFD went to the airport and received an orientation to the vehicle, practiced hooking up water supply, observed a demonstration of the master streams, and operated hand lines provided by the airport vehicle.

Live fire exercise was conducted to allow SLVFD members to practice controlling a fuel based fire.

In addition to fighting fire, SLVFD members were also refreshed on procedures for safely travelling on runways and taxiways. They were also briefed on some safety hazards uniquely associated with aircraft emergencies.

After training a meal was provided by the airport cafe.

It takes a lot of hard work and training to be prepared for all of the different types of situations we can potentially face here in our local community. We are working very hard to keep our community safe.
