Search and Rescue Drill Highlights Annual Open House

By SLVFD News Room
October 5, 2014

As we mark the beginning of the 2014 "Fire Prevention Week" the SLVFD held its annual open house today.

Folks from throughout the community were able to come and enjoy tours of the station, see apparatus and equipment, and meet with Saranac Lake Firefighters. Hot dogs and drinks were served and all were able to enjoy a nice fall day.

On display was Ladder 144, Ice Rescue Equipment, Vehicle Extrication Equipment, and all of the departments vehicles. Current fire and safety information, children's fire hats, and smoke detector batteries were handed out.

This year visitors were able to enter a room filled with non-toxic smoke and observe a team of firefighters conduct a search and rescue exercise in a limited visibility environment. A baby doll was hidden in the room and the team was tasked with rescuing the baby. The drill was narrated and a Question and Answer period followed. The purpose of the drill for the public was 4 fold... 1) to allow the public to witness the challenges that firefighters face when conducting such an operation. 2) to generate interest in becoming a volunteer. 3) to highlight some of the equipment recently purchased using donations received during recent fund raising efforts, and 4) to highlight what to do if you are caught in a fire to stay safe if the firefighters are searching for you. This was particularly important for the children present who were able to learn that even though the fire might be scary, the firefighters are not... Never hide from the firefighters.

We had a great time today sharing our station and visiting with the community we love and protect. We hope everyone had a great time!!!
