SLVFD 125th Anniversary Celebration Schedule (Saturday August 13th)

By SLVFD News Room
August 6, 2016

The SLVFD will host a festive celebration to recognize 125 years of service on Saturday August 13th. Many events are planned. We are honored to recognize our past members and our current members as we look forward to a successful future. We sincerely hope as many as possible attend, we are not only honoring our history, we are honoring the community that supports us.

125 years ago in Saranac Lake 2 competing hose companies raced against each other to be first on scene when fires arose. The Woodruff Hose Company was led by a man named Eugene Woodruff. The Miller Hose Company was led by a man named Milo Miller. These men had the foresight to understand that instead of competing it would be more efficient to work together. In 1891 under their leadership the Woodruff and the Miller hose companies joined forces to become the Woodruff-Miller Hose Company and officially created what we now know as the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department. The dedicated men and women of the SLVFD have been saving lives and property ever since. You can watch a video presentation honoring our history by clicking below.

To honor this occasion, we ask all to enjoy a fun day filled with a parade, entertainment, equipment displays, and great food. The day kicks off with a parade through downtown complete with music, multiple fire departments, first responders and public safety agencies and a special float and walking units of many of our past members. The parade will pause very briefly at the fire station as the SLVFD marching unit passes to lay wreaths at our memorial to honor the past, present, and future members of our department.

Following the parade its off to the Saranac Lake Civic Center and the whole town is invited. Folks will be able grab a burger, cotton candy, view demonstrations, there will be bouncy houses, face painting, and belly buttons the clown will be on hand. United States Congress Woman Elise Stefanik will make a brief presentation. There will be a vehicle extrication demonstration courtesy of the Bloomingdale VFD. Throughout the day music will be provided by Eric Wilson, and the Quigley Highlanders Bagpipe band will be performing live.

Later in the day it’s dinner and a show. There will be a chicken barbecue hosted by St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center and a live Elvis tribute. “The Donny Elvis Revue”
